Review: Blacque/Bleu by Belinda McBride

Blacque/Bleu (Arcada #3)
Cover Source: GoodsReads.com
Title: Blacque/Bleu
Author: Belinda McBride
Series: Arcada #3
Version Reviewed: ARC, eBook

GoodReads Summary:
Lukas Blacque is a deeply closeted werewolf, and almost more than anything in life, he desires his neighbor, Oliver Bleu. Oliver is a vampire who is slowly dying from insomnia. More than anything, he needs Lukas Blacque and the rich blood that flows through his veins.

On the day that Blacque makes an important commitment to his family and pack, he also succumbs to temptation and agrees to a passionate weekend with the alluring vampire. At sunset on Friday, it's all about urgent lust and the drive to lose his virginity. When the sun rises on Monday, lust has shifted to love and devotion. He's not sure he can walk away, even for the commitment he's made. He's even less sure Bleu will let him go.

In Blacque's world, vampires and werewolves make uneasy bedfellows, and a gay werewolf is an impossibility. In Bleu's world, all living creatures are little more than vessels for food and sex. But in the mysterious and magical town of Arcada, the unexpected is always waiting right around the corner. Now Blacque and Bleu just need to survive long enough for Arcada's magic to work for them.
This is a  genre that, unless it's extremely cheesy or horribly written, I'm almost guaranteed to love.  So I had high hopes for Blacque/Bleu.  I'm happy to say that it did not disappoint.  It was very well written, had a good story line and had lovable, strong characters.

I really enjoyed Olive and Lukas' characters, both kind of contradictions of themselves.  Strong where they should be weak and weak where they should excel.  They complimented each other nicely and it worked for the book.

The story line arced nicely, I think.  It was steamy and sexy when it needed to be and serious and action-y when it called for it.  I fell like the author did a really great job at blending the two and didn't make either overpower the other.

Favorite Character:  Oliver and Lukas.
Rating: 4 Stars.

Review: Skin In The Game by Jackie Barbosa

Skin in the Game (Play Action #1)
Cover Source: GoodReads.com
Title: Skin In The Game
Author: Jackie Barbosa
Series: Play Action #1
Version Reviewed: ARC, eBook

GoodReads Summary:
Angela Peterson was always the quiet, shy kid growing up in Harper Falls, crushing on the high school quarterback and honing her football strategy skills. Now grown up and coaching the high school team, she’s shocked when that same sexy quarterback returns to Harper Falls asks her back to his hotel room. And then tries to steal her job.
Injured NFL quarterback Cade Reynolds is in Harper Falls to take over as interim head coach, and he never thought the tall, blond bombshell he propositioned would offer up any resistance. Not to a repeat of the amazingly wild night they shared and certainly not to his coaching position.

But the Harper Falls High Eagles are Angie’s team, and even the hometown hero won’t take that away from her, no matter how hot he is. As the two engage in a battle of wits and wills, this is one game neither is prepared to lose.
I initially received this book to read  and review for the blog tour surrounding it's release.  Unfortunately, I didn't get to participate as planned because I was admitted into the hospital due to pregnancy complications.

I was happy to finally get the chance to read the book, however, and was no disappointed.  It caught and held my attention instantly.  I'm very much into more adult books and Skin In The Game has just enough sexy situations to satisfy without going overboard.  I enjoyed the characters as well as the overall story and believe that, in my opinion, it was very well written.  I would have no problems reading more from Jackie Barbosa in the future.

I do think the ending was pretty predictable but it fit well within the story, so no complaints here.

Review & Giveaway: Blood and Sacrifice by Jessica Gibson

Blood and Sacrifice (Blood Ties #2)
Cover Source: GoodReads.com
Title: Blood and Sacrifice
Author: Jessica Gibson
Series: Blood Ties #2
Version Reviewed: Finished, eBook

GoodReads Summary:
Bronwyn left everything behind when she left with Ronan. She became what he needed her to be and forgot the rest. Too bad the past won't stay in the past.
Rider bursts back into her life uninvited, and is not the man she remembers. There is an edge to him that was not there before. Bronwyn is torn by guilt over what he has become and anger at being blamed for it.
When Ronan ended his maker’s life, he inherited a line of vampires and a whole set of problems to go along with it. Bronwyn must decide if their love is worth it, worth the killing, and the constant disruption of their lives.
Is love enough? Can Bronwyn find herself again and strike a balance between who she wants to be and who Ronan needs her to be? Or will she lose herself all over again?

About The Author

Jessica Gibson is a recovering bookaholic, she's down from four books a week to a more reasonable one. It was that love of words and creativity that made her dream about writing her first book. That dream was hidden for years, always put on the back burner, filed away in the "someday" section, until her husband Matt gave her the kick in the pants she needed to actually get off her butt and write.

Jessica and Matt live in Southern California and have a serious addiction to reality tv shows like Pawn Stars and American Restoration. They have one son and hope to add to the family in the near future.

Aside from writing, she runs an online event planning business called the Release Day Diva. In addition to novels, Jessica writes and maintains the blog Book on the Bright Side. Keep up with Jessica and her latest releases and events on her blog.

My Review
This book starts off quite a while after the ending of Love and Blood.  Our main character has pretty much become a completely different person and has given herself over to Ronan in practically every way that she possibly can.

There is a lot more to this story than in the previous books, which I liked.  The world is getting larger and we're learning more of the inner workings of the vampires.  I do still have a problem with the transitions, however.  It just seem too jumpy and sporadic.  In my opinion, new characters aren't introduced very subtly.  All of a sudden they're there when they didn't exist at first and have never been mentioned previously.

There was a little surprise at the end, which I did not see coming.  It makes me very curious as to what will happen next.

Review: Love and Blood by Jessica Gibson

Love and Blood (Blood Ties, #1)
Cover Source: GoodReads.com
Title: Love and Blood
Author: Jessica Gibson
Series: Blood Ties #1
Version Reviewed: Finished, eBook

GoodReads Summary:
Bronwyn Fitzgibbons was young and reckless. It was easy for Ronan to steal her human life and make her a vampire. She ran, but she never forgot him--or how he made her feel.
Rider saved Bronwyn from the new life she loathed and the new self she detested. His love restored her sanity.

Now Ronan is back to claim her. She struggles like hell against him, but she cannot deny the overwhelming power of her maker. Will Bronwyn surrender to the one who could possess her utterly? Or can she find the strength to choose the one who loves her as she is?
This book started off pretty much right where Blood Lust ended.  It jumps right into the story with no hesitation.

I really liked the characters in this book, especially Ronan.  His story leaves me curious for more information about him.

I did feel like the book was really rushed.  A lot of scenes that could have been drawn out were over really quickly and I feel like the book itself was way too short for the amount of content inside of it.

I also feel like the transition between the Ronan story and the Tucker situation was too sudden and abrupt.  You're dealing with one story and one set of characters when a whole other world comes crashing into the picture unannounced.

I think with just a few more chapters and smoother transitions, I would have really fallen for Love and Blood and could have given it more stars.

Review: Blood Lust by Jessica Gibson

Blood Lust (Blood Ties, #0.5)
Cover Source: GoodReads.com
Title: Blood Lust
Author: Jessica Gibson
Series: Blood Ties #0.5
Version Reviewed: Finished, eBook.

GoodReads Summary:
Ronan has lived for hundreds of years. In all of his years there has only been one for him. What will he risk to get back what is his by right?
I had seen these books floating around for a bit and found myself growing curious about them.  Given my curiosity level was rising, I was excited when the author began seeking out blogs interested in participating in the blog tour for the newest book in the series.  I jumped at the opportunity.

Blood Lust is exactly as the title implies.  Ronan, it seems, is a true vampire.  He kills because he enjoys the blood and gains pleasure from the hunt and kill.  he loves the terror in his victims and he makes sure to have many.

This book was quick and simple to read.  An interesting introduction to the characters that makes you wonder exactly what their stories are and how they intertwine.  I can't wait to read more.

Review: Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan

Boy Meets Boy
Cover Source: GoodReads.com
Title: Boy Meets Boy
Author: David Levithan
Series:
Version Reviewed: Finished, paperback.

GoodReads Summary:
This is the story of Paul, a sophomore at a high school like no other: The cheerleaders ride Harleys, the homecoming queen used to be a guy named Daryl (she now prefers Infinite Darlene and is also the star quarterback), and the gay-straight alliance was formed to help the straight kids learn how to dance.

When Paul meets Noah, he thinks he’s found the one his heart is made for. Until he blows it. The school bookie says the odds are 12-to-1 against him getting Noah back, but Paul’s not giving up without playing his love really loud. His best friend Joni might be drifting away, his other best friend Tony might be dealing with ultra-religious parents, and his ex-boyfriend Kyle might not be going away anytime soon, but sometimes everything needs to fall apart before it can really fit together right.
I had seem this book on GoodReads a little while back and immediately wanted to read it.  I love LGBT books, especially YA.  Dealing with being gay is a hard situation and something that tugs at my heartstrings.

When I began reading Boy Meets Boy, I immediately though of Glee, minus the singing and dancing.  Paul reminded me of one of the characters and I couldn't help but see the boy who dresses in drag on the show as Infinite Darlene.

I really liked this book, but parts of it seemed very unrealistic to me.  But hey, Paul lives in a completely different place than I do, so what do I know?

The book was decently written, a really quick read and had some heart-tugging moments.  I could see this as a television show, no doubt.

Review: Blood of Anteros by Georgia Cates

Blood of Anteros (The Vampire Agápe Series, #1)
Cover Source: GoodReads.com
Title: Blood of Anteros
Author: Georgia Cates
Series: The Vampire Agape #1
Version Reviewed: ARC, eBook

GoodReads Summary:
"I was tantalized by the mystery of her. The leech inside me came out to find prey, but found none in this enigmatic girl. The close proximity of her essence didn’t entice the monster within, so what did that make her? I had more questions than answers, but one thing was unmistakable; although she released me from her embrace, her hold on me remained."
Cruel circumstances turned Curry Brennan into the wretched monster he hates and refuses to accept, but when an expected turn of events releases him from the bond of his obsessive maker, he returns to the home he knew 161 years earlier and finds the return of happiness and joy in something he didn’t know existed. Puzzled by his growing attraction to Chansey Leclaire, a human, he is unable to resist the captivating relationship that threatens to reveal his existence as a vampire. He eventually discovers the reason he was destined to find what he didn’t know he searched for and is faced with the cruel realization that the living and the immortal undead will always be separated by one thing. Eternity.
Blood of Anteros was nothing like I though it was going to be. The book was really great and I enjoyed it immensely. I finished it as soon as I could and read every chance that I got.

A lot of vampire books seem to have the same storylines and even though this one still had elements we have read before, they were done in a really different way and were very well written and though out. There's a mystical quality to it that I have never seen before.

I didn't realize that I was so close the end until I turned the last page and literally almost growled out loud in frustration. I really want the second book.

Review: Between Seasons by Aida Brassington

Between Seasons

Title: Between Seasons
Author: Aida Brassington
Series:
Version Reviewed: ARC, eBook

GoodReads Summary:
Patrick Boyle dies in the fall of 1970, just days before he's due to report for the Vietnam War draft, which seems like a good thing until he realizes he's stuck in the house with no indication of when he'll be escorted to heaven. And after his parents leave the house, he's trapped without company -- until a mysterious woman who can channel his memories buys the house forty years later. The spring brings with it new life, but falling in love with the new owner may only bring heartbreak to them both.
Between Seasons is the story of a boy named Patrick that unfortunately, met his death in the seventies. After he realizes that he isn't "moving on", he becomes stuck in his home for decades, unable to leave. In 2010, he meets and eventually falls in love with the new owner of his house, a troubled woman named Sara.

I really enjoyed Between Seasons. It was really well written and at times, tugs at your heart strings. The story was really interesting and keeps you hooked. I actually read it pretty quickly and was disappointed when I turned the last page. I really couldn't find anything about it that I didn't like. Aida Brassington, from what I've seen is a very good author, and I can't wait to read North of Frost, the next installment in the series.

***Excerpt (Caben’s POV)***

The Crusher grinds to a halt. I’m propelled forward, and my head smacks the low-hanging ceiling of the front compartment.
“Damn, you fool!” I palm my throbbing forehead, eyeing the driver of the Crusher—the machines I now call by their Otherworlder name.
“Sorry, my liege,” he says, backing against his seat, farther away from the glowing ribbons circling my fingers.
Ignoring him, I study the luminous white—like the surface of the moon—crawling beneath my skin, and marvel at the power. My power. Had I possessed it that day the Cavan Army forced me from my home, they never could have done so easily. But then, I never would have obtained this power. Ironic.
“Just drive,” I tell him. I take a seat on the front bench, away from the foul stench emanating from the back compartment—our diversion tactic that will gain me entry into my palace, where I know she’s being kept.
The glow beneath my skin illuminates brighter, reminding me of her skin. I curl my fingers into a tight ball.
The battle up ahead is only part of my plan, one that I know Kaliope will fall for. I need the reserves away from the palace. Then we’ll take care of her Nactue once we’re inside. My back molars clamp down hard at the thought of her—a mix of something like fire and nausea invading my stomach.
At one time, I felt things for the black-haired beauty. I chuckle to myself. Well, at least my groin did. Just thinking of her body makes me ache, and I have to adjust myself. But that was when I was weak, when I only thought and felt with that weakness. As much as I hated my father for thinking me too feeble to rule, he was right. I was pathetic.
Bale freed me. Released the part of me that I kept buried, locked away deep down, and I no longer fear anything. I think of everything that once made me shudder or quake with dread and laugh. It’s so simple.
Without fear, there is only freedom.
Power.
And if I free Bale completely, releasing her from within my being and making her corporeal, she’ll bestow me with even more power. I don’t care what the dark goddess does or where she goes once I restore Empress Iana’s relic. I don’t give a damn what happens to the maggoty Otherworlders or their realm.
I just want her out of my mind. And I want the power.
Then I’ll set my sights on Perinya, and on gaining what’s mine.
A deep cackle fills my head, deep and sultry.
“Quiet, woman.” I roll my eyes. We’ve come to a compromise, the goddess and I, that she may remain within my mind, but she’s to keep quiet. I got tired of her constant lectures and angry rants about her sisters. She does stay silent…for the most part. But the sooner I get her out of my head, the better.
Having a woman fill your thoughts is a weakness in itself. A sudden flash of a smiling, laughing Kal blurs my vision, and I shake my head.
There’s only one way to rid my thoughts of that woman.
Kill her.
“Burrow, leach,” I command the driver. “We’re coming up on the battle. Go underground.”
“Yes, my liege.”
Tonight, I plot. Find a way into the capital of Perinya and into my home. And then take back what’s mine. The goddess can have what she wants. I’m only interested in claiming what’s mine.
No one will ever take anything away from me again.
Don’t get in my way, Kal.
I shake my head harder, trying to quiet the pesky thoughts that always spring up when I think of her. Something left over from before—a residual feeling, an effect she has on me.
It won’t be there much longer. I smile, and Bale laughs.
