Review: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

We Were Liars
Cover Source:
 Title: We We Liars
Author: E. Lockhart
Version Reviewed: eBook, ARC
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley.

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.
We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from New York Times bestselling author, National Book Award finalist, and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.
Oh, this book. I'm honestly not sure where to begin with this review because I literally just finished the book and my head is still reeling at the revelations brought to light by the ending.

As soon as I read the synopsis for this book on NetGalley, I knew that I had to read it. It just sounded like the type of book that I would enjoy though I, unfortunately, took forever to get to it.

In the beginning I didn't read any reviews for We Were Liars but as I began digging into the book, I honestly found it a bit lacking. Until about 50% of the way in, I wasn't sure how I felt about it. Some parts seemed dragged out and it just seemed a little uneventful and unimpressive. Because of this, I decided to check out a few reviews and see if the book was worth continuing. I was pleasantly surprised by all the positive reviews, most boasting about the ending and how they didn't see it coming.

I'm glad that I decided to continue because what I felt about the book in the first half became completely flipped for the second half. I spent the remainder of the book not wanting to put it down and found myself completely caught up in the confusing, drama-filled, angsty world of the Sinclairs. I wanted, no needed to figure out what happened that night and why everything was the way it was. Why people treated Cadence the way they did and why everyone acted certain ways.

I'm not crazy about the particular style in which We Were Liars is written but, push that aside, and it's an absolutely beautiful book. It completely blew my mind and has left me in a funk that is going to take a bit to bring myself out of.

Rating: 4 Stars.

Until Madison ends up in his tattoo parlor, broken, afraid and alone. There’s something about her, and almost immediately, Klayton’s guard drops. Now, everything he knows about himself changes as his life begins to unravel.

Book #2 Hard Love – Cat and Brando
Book #3 Bad Love – Isaiah & Bell
When love hurts, heals, begs, and steals, the only way to deal is to ink up.
Life had a way of expunging your expectations.
But it also had a way of rebuilding them.
I met a hero the day I walked into Klayton’s tattoo shop, broken and terrified. My heart was tattered, and my mental state was a plain of rubble in my skull. He wasn’t your typical hero. But atypical was exactly what I needed. I needed strength to combat my weaknesses. I needed love to fight my terror. And I needed someone to look at me like I was whole, when I feared I never would be again.
I sometimes wished we could have a do-over. That I could walk into his tattoo shop smiling, clean, and glowing. But that would only erase the brutal, beautiful truth of us. I didn’t walk into his tattoo shop smiling, I wasn’t clean, and I was severely damaged.
But Klayton loved me anyway. Even when I was empty, even when I was broken.
Even when I was mad.

Author Bio:
When I walk into a book store I feel at home. When I smell the pages of a brand new book things make sense. When I read I am who I always wanted to be. I read to escape and I write so others can as well. My family, my actress dog Bella, coffee, and a steamy love story are a few of my most precious things.

A romantic adventure from #1 bestselling author Summer Lane, set amidst the gritty and awe-inspiring setting of Alaska during the last great Gold Rush.
Interview with Bestselling Author Summer Lane
(Courtesy of Writing Belle Publishing)
This is your first historical fiction. How different was the writing process, as opposed to the past 17 novels you’ve written – which have all been post-apocalyptic?
A historical novel is more strictly attached to the time period in which it takes place. The way people talk, dress, act, and even eat are different than how we do all of those things modernly. I had to do a lot of research, of course. I have been slowly working on this book for roughly 2 years, when the idea originally occurred to me. I have read so many books about Alaska…toward the end of the writing process, I was devouring whole college textbooks and double fact-checking everything I had until I was entirely sure my eyes were going to fall out of my head.
With my apocalyptic books, the research is tactically-oriented, if that makes sense. With Wolves, I had to make sure the slang and vernacular was correct and that the history was right on target. I took a few artistic liberties with the story, as all writers do, but everything is based in fact. Everything.
Where did the idea for Running with Wolves come from?
I have always loved animals. I have always loved dogs. I first was enraptured by the idea of setting a story in Alaska when I was a little girl, after watching the animated film Balto for the first time. The concept for this particular novel sprung up about 2 years ago. It took me a long time to cultivate the plot to a point where I liked it enough to go ahead and write the book. I have always wanted to write a western-style novel, and that’s what Wolves is. A western novel set in the snow, with adventure and romance.
Where does the story actually take place?
I have constructed a fictional tale within the boundaries of the boomtowns and mining camps that existed in 1898. The main character, Jenna Renee, lives outside of a town called Dyea. I used prominent and famous historical hotspots, such as the Chilkoot Pass and Dawson City, in the book, too.
Can we look forward to some romance, in addition to adventure?
Yes! One of the central themes of the novel is the romance story between Jenna Renee and the rather callous but handsome United States Marshal Jeremiah Black. I love Jeremiah’s character – he’s got a lot of surprises up his sleeve, and I think readers will love him as much as Jenna does.
What are your upcoming projects?
Well, I have a non-fiction novel coming up in the next several months: Prolific: Writing a Hit Novel. I’m also releasing the first installment of the anticipated Resurrection Series in January 2018. Resurrection will continue the adventures, fights, and romances of Commander Cassidy Hart from the hit Collapse Series.

Author Bio:
Summer Lane is the #1 bestselling author of 18 novels, including the smash-hit Collapse Series. She owns Writing Belle Publishing. Lane is also an experienced journalist and creative writing teacher. Writing Belle is her online magazine, where she has interviewed and featured hundreds of writers from around the globe.
Look for her upcoming books, Prolific: Writing a Hit Novel, and Resurrection: Shadows of Omega, the hotly anticipated continuation of Cassidy Hart’s post-apocalyptic adventures.

Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
A sexy, gripping romantic suspense…
She has three rules: No marriage. No children. No promise.
He’s going to love her.
Thad Bowers, Vice President of Notus Motorcycle Club, searches for missing persons when he’s not punching the clock at Port Loaders. He goes out of his way to hold those he loves close since his sister was kidnapped and murdered twenty-four years ago, and he lost his MC brother in the aftermath. So, when the mysterious woman who has tempted him one too many times needs his help, he’s not walking away. No matter how many rules she throws at him.
As a 911 dispatcher, Lena Hollis deals with emergencies from a safe distance. She enjoys a quiet, private life, with the occasional non-committal date thrown in for excitement. But, her simple life grows complicated when Tigres, a local gang, puts a mark on her back and her recent date hauls her to his house for her protection. A home that includes parents, bikers, and a huge social circle. Everything she doesn’t want in her life.
Lena brings new meaning to being the black sheep of the family. Thad’s going to do everything within his power to show her what it feels like to give and receive love. To hell with the rules…
He put his phone on the nightstand. “It’s after midnight. Get some sleep.”
“Bathroom?” she asked.
He pointed, and she left the room. Stripping off his Notus jacket, he took off his boots, his clothes, his boxers, and dropped into bed. Wayne wanted all Notus members on the road at six o’clock in the morning. He needed to get some sleep if he was going to ride.
Lena returned to the room. Her footsteps stopped at the door because he’d shut off the light.
He rested his forearm on his forehead and kept his eyes closed. “Walk straight in. You’ll feel the bed. You’ll be sleeping on the far side, nearer the wall.”
“Like this isn’t awkward, Thad.” Her voice came louder the closer she got to the bed. “Do you expect me to fall on your dick now that you’ve made up your mind…and only because you think you can help me with that gang that wants to hurt me? If none of this would’ve happened, you wouldn’t have agreed to have a relationship based on sex with me. Remember, you were the one who turned me down and then left me.”
Her hand bumped into his covered feet, and then the mattress dipped and jostled as she climbed from the foot of the bed to the top and slid under the blankets.
Lena stilled. He tried to relax having her in bed, but his cock had hardened at the first sign of the bed moving. Ignoring his problem, he went through the information Gomez handed him, and Lena added on to. Tigres weren’t a group to fuck with on their turf. He’d worked with them in the past when searching for missing persons. Their word meant nothing unless they received something in return. He only had to figure out what Notus had that Tigres would want.
Lena sighed. “You’re an asshole,” she whispered.
“An asshole that’s going to take care of you.” He rolled away from her to his side.
He rather have her mad at him and alive than find out she’d been hurt and killed.

A soft mist hovered over the moonlit lake, beckoning, luring him forward with the seductive enticement of a mermaid’s song. Rhythmic clatter of a distant train moaned in harmony with a symphony of cricket chirps and croaking frogs. Spellbound, Nick Cramer took a long breath and waded deeper into the murky cove. Dank air, laden with a scent of soggy earth and pine, crawled across his bare arms. The hairs on the back of his neck bristled, shooting a prickle down his spine that slithered into an icy pool coiled in the pit of his stomach. He clenched his fingers into a tight fist, determined to fight through the emotion consuming him. Fear sliced through his belly like icy shards until he finally heaved, forcing rancid bile to choke into his throat.
I have to do this––he inched forward––only a few more steps and––
A sudden surge swirled around him, yanking him into a whirling vortex, where a violent blue streak dragged him deeper, deeper beneath the lake into the shadowy depths. Heart pounding, he battled against the force, twisting, thrusting toward the surface with all of his strength but, despite his muscular build, he spun like a feather in wind into oblivion. When the mist dissolved, Nick Cramer had vanished.

Excerpt: Moribund by Genevieve Iseult Eldredge

Genevieve Iseult Eldredge
(Circuit Fae #1)
Published by: Monster House Books
Publication date: September 12th 2017
Genres: LGBTQ+, Urban Fantasy, Young Adult
Dark Fae. Romance. Evil Plots. High school. Our heroines could be in for the greatest adventure ever.
If only they could decide whether to kill or kiss each other.
High school sophomore Syl Skye is an ordinary girl. At least, she’s trying to be. School photographer and all-around geek, she introverts hard and keeps her crush on sexy-hot glam-Goth alt-rock star Euphoria on the down-low. But when a freak accident Awakens her slumbering power, Syl is forced to accept a destiny she never wanted—as the last sleeper-princess of the fair Fae.
Suddenly hunted by the dark Fae, Syl’s pretty sure things can’t get any worse. Until she discovers her secret crush, Euphoria, is really a dark Circuit Fae able to harness the killing magic in technology. Even worse, she’s been sent to destroy Syl.
With mean girls and magic and dark Fae trying to kill her, it’ll take more than just “clap if you believe in fairies” to save Syl’s bacon—not to mention, her heart.
Perfect for readers of romance, urban fantasy, fairy stories and LGBT.

In this scene, the heroine Syl discovers she is the fair Fae sleeper-princess—and that Euphoria is really a dark Fae assassin come to kill her. Surprising everyone, Euphoria turns against her commander, Agravaine, and tries to save Syl from a grim fate.

“Run!” Euphoria shoves me one last time, and I go stumbling. The music is blaring, the feedback loop screaming through the amps. My heartbeat ramps up, jack-knifing me in two. That night, the tracks, the accident, the train whistle that went on and on and on… My brain struggles to remember details, but looking at her, looking at Agravaine, only fear comes, bright and stabbing.
Panic lights up my limbs. I’m at the stage’s edge before I look back.
Agravaine stands over Euphoria, his face black with rage. He grabs her, lifts her off her feet with one hand. One hand. Holy--! I’m stunned by the unreality of it—like I’m watching two actors do a Hollywood stunt.
One hand is bunched in her leather jacket. With his other, he viciously yanks the main power cord. Sparks fly, the music cuts off, and a whole bank of stage lights go out, all the blues and greens winking out until we are bathed in red like blood.
Red lights. Emergency lights. That night on the train, our train car pitching over the side of the viaduct, the James River a black abyss below us, Fiann’s screams in my ear, her fingernails digging into my arm.
She stands behind Agravaine now, a look of sick triumph stamped on her face.
It’s the look of someone who’s totally lost their grip on reality. Her loopy grin is movie-villain creepy. She walks over to the pulpit the Homecoming committee’s erected and grabs the crown. She puts it on her head.
Homecoming queen. I’d like to brain her with the royal scepter, but I’ve got bigger problems.
Agravaine lifts Euphoria up by the throat. Pain lines her face, her hands tensing on his as she struggles to escape. He leans in, whispers something I don’t hear, and the gloomy-dark indigo aura that surrounds him waves over her. She stops fighting.
I have to help her!
I run, but I don’t flee.
My hand touches the fire alarm. “Hey!” I shout my challenge over the dazed crowd, but their collective aura stays all violet. They’re still under whatever spell Euphoria cast. They won’t be any help. I’m on my own. “Hey, jerkface!”
Agravaine whips around to look at me, his white hair flying anime-style, those shark-black eyes eating into my soul…that indigo aura rippling off him. I feel its gross, sticky heat lapping at my skin.
“Ugh. No wonder you’re single.” That, and he clearly doesn’t know how to treat a lady. “Let her go.”
“Sleeper-princess.” He growls it so deep it reverberates in my bones. “Sleeper-princess.” He growls it like my name, and it fits. Like a glove. I don’t know what-all he’s talking about, but some part of me deep down feels the truth.
I am the sleeper-princess. Whatever that means. I can worry about it later. Right now, my give-a-damn is totally broken. I only care about Euphoria.
I make like I’m going to pull the alarm. “Let her go. Now!”
He only smiles while Euphoria fights his dark Command, fear for me in her eyes.
“Go ahead, sleeper-princess.” He squeezes her throat tighter, calling my bluff.
I should be shaking in my Docs. Euphoria’s badass, and if she’s afraid, I should be running my butt off, but Glamma always said, “Wear your big-girl panties to the ball.”
Well, I’m at the ball, all right. I pull the fire alarm. Your funeral, pal.
The glass breaks, and a howling wail fills the club. It shatters whatever woojy-woo Euphoria’s got going on. People scream and grab their ears. The violet-funk aura over everyone dissipates like mist in a high wind. Yay!
And then the panic starts.

Excerpt & Giveaway: Finding You by Lydia Albano

Finding You
Lydia Albano
Published by: Swoon Reads
Publication date: September 19th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult
Taken from home and family, all they have is each other.
Isla is kidnapped from a train platform in broad daylight, and thrust into a nightmare when she is sold to a sadistic aristocrat. Locked in a dungeon with a dozen other girls, Isla’s only comfort is a locket and the memory of the boy she loves. But as days pass and more girls disappear, she realizes that help is not coming… If they’re going to survive, they’ll have to escape on their own.
Swoon Reads is proud to present Lydia Albano’s debut novel, a powerful story of a teen girl finding strength and hope in even the worst circumstances.

“If I could free us, would you come?” His expression turns to one of fear. “Des, you’ll never find out what happened to your sister if you keep on doing the same thing day after day. You can’t keep working for the man who took her and hope you’ll learn the truth. Certainly not if you want a happy ending.” I shouldn’t promise anything, but I can’t help my self. “If we get out, we’ll look for Lillian. We can find out what happened once and for all. I’ll help you.”
He watches me for a long moment, his jaw set like he won’t let himself hope.
“The day I was taken, Des, there were so many people that when the hands grabbed me and dragged me away, no one noticed.” I’m there again in my head, on the platform in the hot sun. I can feel the fear again, the same as when they pulled me through the crowd. “How did no one notice?”
“I’m so sorry, Isla.” Des’s voice draws me out of my memory trap and I look down, realizing I’m clutching the bars between us. I release them, my fingers burning from holding on so tightly, and take a deep breath.
“I can’t remember if I even kissed my pa when I left, Des. I was going to say goodbye to someone.” I feel as if something is crushing my chest; the talking hurts, but keeping quiet is worse, with the words pulling at my tongue.
“His name is Tam and I love him. Everyone in this cell loves someone they’re missing. Your sister, Val’s family. We need to get home to them.” For the longest time, every thing is quiet, with only the breathing of the other girls stirring the air.
“You really do look so much like her, you know,” he says quietly, his eyes far off. “And she could always twist my arm.” He smiles ever so slightly, nodding. “Where was he going, your Tam?”
My Tam. “To join Nicholas Carr’s army. I don’t know where he is now.”
“But you’ll go and look for him?” I nod, hoping I look confident. “Maybe we can look together, after we find Lillian.” I hiccup on a sob of relief. “Do you even have a plan?” Des says, shaking his head. “Nothing stupid, I hope.”
“All my ideas are stupid.”
“Well, so long as one of them works, then.

Excerpt & Giveaway: Five by J.A. Huss

J.A. Huss
(Mister 0.5)
Publication date: September 19th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance
Five Aston has known Rory Shrike for as long as he can remember. He played with her in the sandbox. He went to every damn horse show just to be supportive. He helped her with her French, walked her home from school, and faked his test scores just to stay with her a little longer and not be sent off to college early.
But eventually he had to move on.
And so did she.
Never has a second chance meant so much to a boy who loves a girl.
A standalone book that is also a spin-off of the Rook & Ronin Series and prequel to the Mister Series. You can read it first, you can read it last. It doesn’t really matter because it’s f*cking Five.
“You want a kiss?”
“Mmmhmm,” I say, closing my eyes as I picture it. God, I’ve dreamed of this moment for ages. “I really need one, Five.”
His mouth touches my earlobe. Lips caress the soft skin of my neck. “Like this?” he asks.
“Yes,” I practically moan. “Just… like… that.”
“Do you want more, Princess?” he asks, his voice low now. Growly. Filled with so much promise.
“More, please,” I say, in my sweetest princess voice.
“Then promise me, baby. Just say those two words. ‘I promise.’ And as soon as you do that, I’ll give you everything you want. OK?”
“Five,” I moan. “Just—”
His hands come up suddenly. He cups my face, stares into my eyes with the most sincere expression I’ve ever seen on him. And underneath that sincerity, I see… fear. “Promise me.”
“Five,” I say, unable to stop staring back. This is everything. Everything I’ve always dreamed of. Five pressing me up against a wall. Me, the only thing on his mind. Except I’m not the only thing on his mind, am I? No. Those creeps from the past are back. That’s why he’s here. And even though I’d normally not give in so easy, I know this is not a game. So I say, “I promise. Now stop talking, you stupid genius, and kiss me already.”
He smiles. Leans in. I close my eyes, ready for it. Finally gonna get what I want.
But then he moves his mouth to my ear and nibbles on my lobe. “Good girl,” he coos. “But I’m not sure I believe you, Princess. I can feel those wheels turning inside your head. They’re grinding hard.” He presses his hard cock against my hip when he says that last part. “So I’m gonna hold off on that kiss until I get back tonight. And if you’ve been good, and if you’ve held up your end of the—”
“What?” I say, pushing him back. “You will do no such thing, Five Aston! I want a fucking kiss and I want one right now! I’ve waited six years for this, and denying me is practically emotional abuse. Now stop fucking around and kiss me, goddammit!”
“Who’s the boss of you, Rory?”
I huff out some air. “Me.”
He smiles. It’s a big, genuine, I’m-gonna-teach-you-who’s-boss smile. “Wrong answer.”

Publication date: September 1st 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult
Gaia finally knows who she is and what she’s meant to do. It’s only been a few weeks since the earth element woke in her. Now that she’s embracing her role as Mother Nature, she must journey with her group of power-wielding friends in a race against time to get back home before Azazel reaches them.

With the awakening of a brand new element, her true past with Edan, a dangerous decision that could change the very essence of who she is, and a traitor among her group, the broken road back to Terra will be a test of strength.

After all, even if Gaia doesn’t know it, war is closer than she thinks.

Dizzy and confused, Edan crashed with Willow. His body felt hot and agitated. She noticed his pupils were the size of the moon, the green in his eyes was barely visible and his shirt was half unbuttoned. “Edan?” she called to him yet he kept running away.
Willow slammed the door open. “What the hell happened here?”
Synthia didn’t understand what happened. Everything was great and then out of nowhere, everything went wrong. “Nothing.”
Not buying it, Willow wielded one of the room’s plants and used it to trap Synthia.
“Fine!” She wiggled in vain. “I made a love potion.”
“A what?”
“A magic potion to make Edan want me.”
For a moment Willow wasn’t sure how much reality that answer had until she saw the glass on the floor. “Are you stupid? For the tenth time, we are not wizards and they are not potions!”
“Whatevs you are.” Synthia wiggled for a second time failing to escape. “Your stuff doesn’t work.”
Willow lifted the glass and smelled it. “What did you mix?”
“It’s in my back pocket.”
Willow snatched the folded paper and read it. “Where did you find this?”
“Internet, duh!” She rolled her eyes as if the answer was obvious.
“Not the spell, the ingredients.”
“Your box.” She smiled, happy to steal from Willow right under her nose.
Willow crushed the paper and the vines followed her wield pressing more around Synthia. “You went through my stuff?!”
“Take a chill pill.” Synthia took a deep breath. “It didn’t work.”
“How well did you follow this?” Willow asked placing the paper closer to Synthia’s face.
“The chant?”
“Forget the chant.” Willow cracked, she was clearly worried about the ingredients on that piece of paper. “Tell me, how well did you follow the ingredients?”
“What it says there,” she whined. “I also added more of the greeny things. Like two more”
“What greeny things?” Willow released her from the plants and gave her the wrinkled paper. “Concentrate and point where you see the name of the greeny things,” she said, then Synthia pointed where. Willow read it “That? You put three Daturas?”
“Yes, and?”
“We need to stop Edan.” Willow hyperventilated. “Now,” she yelled.
“Wow!” Donovan ran into the room after hearing all the screaming. “What’s the stress?”
Willow took the page away from Synthia’s hands and showed it to Donovan. “This bitch made an intense aphrodisiac and drugged Edan with it.”
“No way! That’s hilarious.” Donovan cried from laughing but stopped cold as soon as he saw Willow’s deadly stare. “I mean… That’s terrible. Where is he?”
“I don’t know.” Willow was really stressed.
“Relax.” Synthia snatched away the page from Donovan’s fingers. “Nothing happened. More like the other way around, he got like super annoyed with me.”
“It did work,” said Willow. “Just not with you.”
Synthia crossed her arms. “In English?”
“In English…” Donovan translated. “He’s going after Gaia.”

Excerpt & Giveaway: Across the Darkling Sea by K. Ferrin

Across the Darkling Sea
K. Ferrin
Publication date: November 12th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
Across the Darkling Sea is the first book in the new serial fantasy series Magicfall, by K. Ferrin!
Magic is forbidden in Brielle, but that never stopped Evelyn. Until Now. Because Evelyn has discovered she is magic, and now she is running for her life.
Her only hope is on an island cloaked in shadow, an island of dark magic and even darker beasts. An island warlocks call home.
Evelyn’s friends have turned against her, her own mother tried to kill her, and the place she calls home has banished her. Hidden away in the belly of a riverboat, a stowaway, her journey begins.

Across the Darkling Sea is book one in a serial series. Each book is roughly 50,000 words or about 150 pages. To emphasize, this is a serial series, meaning it’s one story that stretches across multiple books.

A velvety mist rose from the canals and waterways of Meuse as Evelyn hurried along. It drifted in thick ropes, painting the pre-dawn darkness with soft smears of gray. She could feel it against her skin like a damp breath, and she couldn’t stop herself from glancing around for the thousandth time since she’d left her house that morning, but the dark and fog kept her surroundings hidden. Everyone in the town could have been lurking there, watching her every move, and she would never have been able to tell.
She pushed the worry out of her mind and pulled the hood of her cloak forward, burying her head more deeply in its folds. No one knew what she was up to. No one was watching. Her parents’ room had been dark and quiet when she’d snuck by on her way out.
The agitated thoughts moved aside easily, but she couldn’t stop the cold sliver of fear that pushed through the pulsing heat of her excitement. She’d snuck magic into Meuse before, but nothing like this. Every time before it had been a tiny little trinket—things that barely qualified as magic. But this was very different. She doubted even her mother would be able to save her this time if she were caught. As chancellor, her mother would likely have to be even harsher in dealing out punishment. Every person in Meuse would demand it. If word got out, every person in the entire country would demand it.
She moved faster, placing her feet carefully to avoid the drumming thump of her knee-high mud boots on the raised wooden walkways of Meuse. If even one person saw her out and about and realized what she was up to, it was over. She hadn’t even dared tell Rudy what she was doing, and he was her closest friend. They’d gotten into every sort of trouble together over the years, but even he drew the line at magic.
Rudy said his resistance to her reckless fascination with magic was because magic was dangerous and inherently evil. But Evelyn thought it more likely that he feared magic only because he didn’t understand it and couldn’t use it.
It wasn’t his fault. No one in Brielle could. Whether due to some trick of geography or breeding or something else, the reality was that while everywhere else in the world that Evelyn knew of had magic, Brielle had none. A tragedy in Evelyn’s opinion, a blessing to literally every other person alive in the country. Instead of trying to figure out how to gain magic, Brielle had outlawed all forms within its borders long before anyone living had even been born.
The only things in Brielle were endless swamplands, groves of zildeschor trees, and in the few places where enough grains of sand had managed to bind together and rise a fraction above the brackish water, grass.
Almost in the exact center of Brielle, the river port of Meuse huddled on a wide spit of land just above the point where the Lisse River dumped unceremoniously into the Arnhem River before continuing its bloated journey to the sea. Evelyn had lived here her entire life, and it was as featureless and boring as the rest of Brielle.

Excerpt & Giveaway: Falling For You by Charlotte Blake

Falling For You
Charlotte Blake
(Great Escapes, #1)
Publication date: September 12th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Sometimes love finds you whether you want it to or not …
Grace Clark is a star at her job as an art director at Boston’s biggest advertising firm. But inside she’s still mourning the loss of her sister two years ago. Losing Mia and a failed engagement have been enough to keep her heart on lockdown ever since.
Luke Arnold is tired of relationships that don’t go anywhere. Usually women are all over him, but it’s been years since he’s met someone he could really fall for.
But when he sees Grace from across the room at the Redview Lodge, he can’t keep his eyes off her. They meet in the New Hampshire mountains over Thanksgiving, and they find in one another something that neither of them expected.
NOTE: This STAND-ALONE romance contains very steamy love scenes. All of the books in the Great Escapes series can be read in any order.
Mia turned up the radio as her sedan flew across the slick road.
Let’s Go Crazy.
She was excited about the trip home. She had been living in New York, and despite the close proximity to Boston, she hadn’t seen her sister, Grace, for four months. Mia was just finishing school, and between internships and the huge amount of work she had been putting in to earn her MBA, there just wasn’t any time. She was lucky to have a sister like Grace. She understood when Mia was too busy to talk. And with Grace, she never needed to feel pressured to have a perfect relationship. When they did get a chance to see each other, it was as if they had never been apart.
Though lately Mia had been trying to make extra time to connect with her heartbroken sister, at least on the phone. Grace was just getting on her feet again after a long depression. Her fiancé had pulled a fast one on her, and there had been a few months of Mia visiting her often, trying to coax her off the couch and into therapy. Grace had been absent from work long enough that her job was on the line. She had some savings, but not enough to last her more than a few months.
Grace had resisted at first, but Mia had seen this kind of thing before and had known exactly what to do. In the end, she’d found the right doctor and therapist for her sister and then harassed her until she made, and kept, appointments with them. It took some time, but eventually she had started to come back to herself. Mia credited the meds more than anything, though she knew Grace hated having to take them.
She was back to work now, though, busy again, and they still talked a couple times a week to touch base, more if Grace needed someone to cry to. Mia was relieved that she would have a chance to focus on her for a bit, and was glad the mellow holiday at home wouldn’t distract them too much. There were lots of tears in those weekly calls, and though they’d ebbed away a bit, she couldn’t wait to wrap her arms around her sister in a big bear hug.
She and Grace had grown up at their parents’ place in Boston. It had been even longer since she had seen them, and she couldn’t wait to catch up on all the family gossip. Her mom tended to try to keep family secrets just that: secret. But her dad had let slip that her aunt’s daughter had been working, no joke, as a stripper. Everyone in the family was in a tizzy about it, but were too afraid to confront her. Mia would have loved the opportunity to get the details first hand, but really she had been relieved to find out that her aunt and cousin would not be joining them for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Probably too embarrassed, she thought.
She laughed aloud as the music played. She had never been close with her cousin, but Angie had been known to jump around from school to school, project to project, job to job. Whatever the story was, Mia was sure there would be plenty of secondhand lurid details once she pulled into the driveway. She’d get her mom to talk, even if it took all week.
It was getting late, nearly eleven, and she was eager to get there. She had expected to arrive by nine, but no such luck. The traffic out of the city had lasted for hours. But now she was on the move again. The snow had turned to rain, which meant the roads were pretty clear now, and she pushed on the gas a little harder.
The music on the radio changed, and a moment later Winter Wonderland was blasting through her speakers.
“Aw, yuck!” she shouted at the radio, wrenching the volume down.
It wasn’t even Thanksgiving yet, and already with the Christmas music! The last thing she needed was to get that junk spinning through her head all night long.
She picked up her phone to switch to her playlist. She was an expert at her phone, and could make most of the selections, even texting, without even looking at the thing. One day they’d probably just implant the information into people’s brains somehow, but for now she just had to wing it like everyone else.
But it was late, and she was on the freeway. She needed to look at the screen to select some different music. She checked around her for cops and then waited for a straight stretch of road. She held the phone up to the steering wheel so she could glance back and forth between the screen and the road, scrolling down the list, searching for something classic, something she could sing to, to wake her up a little for the last hour of the drive. More Prince, maybe.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw a movement, something white speeding by her passenger side window. A motorcycle? No.
It was a truck, and it was going way too fast. He was going to cut her off. She dropped her phone and blared her horn, then watched in horror as it tipped onto two wheels, about to flip over right in front of her.
How was this happening?
She steered right to get out of the way. The back end of the truck clipped her car at just the right spot. Just the wrong spot.
She was airborne. There was no sound but for her own blood pumping, ringing in her ears.
Time slowed down.
As her car flipped through the air again and again, her thoughts went blank. Adrenaline rushed through her body as the first airbag went off, but when the car smashed upside down onto the pavement, she only registered the pain.
And then it was over.
She was gone.

Excerpt & Giveaway: Addiction by Vivian Wood

Vivian Wood
(Addicted To You, #1)
Publication date: September 14th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance
It started innocently enough. Beautiful Harper gave Sean those eyes… those eyes that meant, yes, take me. But Harper didn’t know Sean’s secrets… She didn’t know that he liked it rough.
More than rough. He liked to dominate. To punish. To degrade. It was the only way that the black hole in his soul wouldn’t swallow him up.
He would push her a little too far, and she would run. They all ran, eventually.
But that’s not what happened… when he put his hands around her throat and squeezed, Harper moaned. When he told her to stay away, she didn’t listen, misbehaving until she got spanked. When he took out the handcuffs, there was excitement in her eyes, mixed with a little fear.
The doe-eyed redhead liked it. More than that, she wanted it. She said so, time and again.
That’s the thing about sexy strangers, though… you never know what they’re hiding. And Harper is carrying a burden so heavy that even Sean’s secrets pale in comparison.
This book is Book 1 out of 2 in the Addicted To You duet. At approximately 50,000 words, it ends in a cliffhanger. As a dark romance, it touches several sensitive topics, but contains no cheating. Book 2 will end in a happily ever after.
Sean paused. “Are you certain you want to go in?” he asked.
He turned to look at her to see her swallow. Harper nodded. He couldn’t get a read on her.
“Speak up,” he said. “Was that a ‘yes, sir’?”
Harper fluttered her lashes and looked down. “Y—yes. Yes, sir,” she said obediently. Quietly.
Fuck, the things she could do. “You make me so fucking hard,” he said. Her eyes shot open.
Sean took her hand and led her through the heavy wooden door. It closed behind them with a loud click. He removed his bowtie and watched her survey the room. “Get undressed.”
Without a pause, she started to kick off her shoes.
“Leave them on,” he instructed. Sean sat back in a black leather seat. Harper peeled off the dress and let it fall to the floor.
As she stepped out of the fallen latex, in just a lace thong and matching bra, he couldn’t believe her dimensions. She had a tiny waist, a wasp’s waist, as if she’d been in waist-training for years. Her hip bones jutted out like fins before angling down to slender thighs and shapely calves.
“Right now, right here in this room, you exist solely for my pleasure,” he said. “You’re here to please me in whatever way I see fit.” He stopped himself, aware of his quickened breath. Sean raised a brow. “Get on with it.”
