Cover Source: GoodReads.com |
Author: Heidi Murkoff
Version Reviewed: Finished, eBook
Website: www.whattoexpect.com
I borrowed this book from the Kindle Lending Library.
GoodReads Synopsis:
Incorporating everything that's new in pregnancy, childbirth, and the lifestyles of parents-to-be, complete with a preconception plan, information on choosing a practitioner, birthing alternatives, second pregnancies, twins, making love while pregnant, and coping with common and not so common pregnancy symptoms.
Review:
(This review was originally written in 2013 but was never posted).
Before I even became pregnant I knew that this was going to be my go-to book for pregnancy and baby related things. As soon as I found out I was expecting, I searched on my Kindle to see how much it was and was so excited to find that I could borrow it for free.
This book had a lot fo useful information in it. I will admit that I skipped or skimmed over quite a bit but those were things that didn't pertain to me in particular. That's not saying that they were any less helpful or important.
I really enjoyed the week by week sections and read them religiously (along with my BabyCenter updates, of course). There was also an entire section for the dad-to-be, which I thought was really great. It gave my husband something to read that was centered soley on him and what he is and would be going through.
Overall, very useful and informative.
Rating: 5 Stars.

Review: Unbroken by Melody Grace
Cover Source: GoodReads.com |
Author: Melody Grace
Series: Beachwood Bay #1
Version Reviewed: Finished, eBook

I purchased this book myself.
GoodReads Synopsis:
"Mom always told me there are two kinds of love in this world: the steady breeze, and the hurricane. Emerson Ray was my hurricane...."Review:
Juliet McKenzie was an innocent eighteen-year old when she spent the summer in Beachwood Bay—and fell head over heels in love with Emerson. Complicated, intense Emerson, the local bad boy. His blue eyes hid dark secrets, and just one touch could set Juliet ablaze. Their love was demanding and all-consuming, but when summer ended, tragedy tore them apart. Juliet swore she’d never go back, and she’s kept that promise… Until now.
Four years later, Juliet’s done her best to rebuild the wreckage of her shattered life. She’s got a great boyfriend, and a steady job planned after she graduates. Returning to Beachwood to pack up her family’s beach house to prepare it for sale, Juliet is determined that nothing will stand in the way of her future. But one look from Emerson, and all her old desire comes flooding back. He let her go once, but this time, he’s not giving up without a fight. And Emerson fights dirty.
A heartbreaking history. An unstoppable passion. Torn between her past and future, Juliet struggles to separate love from desire. But will they find a way to overcome their tragic secrets—together? And after so much damage has been done, can a love remain unbroken?
(This review was originally written in 2013 but never posted).
I added this book to my GoodReads To-Read list when I first heard about it. I didn't realize that I had Melody Grace on Facebook until she started posting about the book going live on Amazon. I bought it on my Kindle within the hour and spent the next three and half reading it. I was instantly pulled in. This was a book that I didn't want to put down. I read the entire thing really quickly.
It was very well written (with the exception of some errors along the way) and the characters were easy to get to know. As I stated already, the story itself was easy to fall into and I completely lost myself in it. The setting was beautiful to imagine and actually kind of reminded me of a little tourist beach town that I experienced with my dad and my sister one summer in North Carolina.
I would definitely read this book again, even if it was just for the sexy, brooding Emerson. ;)

Review:
(This review was originally written in 2013 but never posted).
Okay, it's stupid to say, but I almost didn't read this book because the female lead has the same nickname as my daughter. I'm really glad that I did though, because this book is really great.
It took me no time at all to get into it and I fell into the story line really easily. Even though most of the things are really easy to figure out, this book is really well written and I would have no problems recommending it to someone that is open to historical romance. Normally I'm not much into historical novels, but it's ones like these that are the exception. I would definitely read this story again and it has made me aware of a great author.
I would love to read more of Quincy's work in the future.

(This review was originally written in 2013 but was never posted.)
Okay, first off let me say that I really wish I had read the first book in the series before I read this one. It isn't an absolute must but all of the characters are obviously introduced in Taming The Bachelor. So with that out of the way...
This book started off with a bang. It literally jumped right into the story without warning. It took me a moment to catch up but once I did, I was quickly pulled in.
I really enjoyed the characters and have to admit that the story took a couple twists and didn't turn out like I thought it was going to, especialy after reading some of the reveiws. The book didn't quite bring me to tears but it did occasionally pull on my heartstrings a little.
Overall, I really enjoyed Taming The Playboy and I would gladly read the other books in the series.

GoodReads Synopsis:
Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…Review:
Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.
Something worse than the Arum has come to town…
The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.
But then everything changes…
I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?
No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…
(This review was originally written in 2014 but never posted).
I am so insanely happy that I found this series. I honestly can't get enough of it.
Alright, to get right into it, this book was so well written and just like Obsidian, it sucked me in immediately. The story was full of twists and turns and kept you on the edge of your seat. We got to laern more about the DOD and the Luxen and it was very interesting to learn the rules and inner workings of the alien race and their enemies.
This book had quite a few moments that broke my heart and pissed me off but it just made me love it even more. The Thanksgiving scene... oh my goodness. I just kept falling more and more in love with Daemon.
It was also really neat to see the return of a couple of characters. I can't get enough and I can't wait to read more.

The name on the file folder, J. McKenna, gave me a chill. He had been wounded in the line of duty—shot by a bank robbery suspect. Seeing the name reminded me of where I came from and why the need for hiding existed. I pushed the memories down. I’m not that person anymore. That person doesn’t exist. It wasn’t necessary to touch the necklace underneath my sweater as a reminder, but it had become a nervous habit. The locket was the only thing I had kept from that life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The door opened and Sheila showed my patient in. As my eyes met his, my heart stopped for what seemed like hours. After reading the file, I was afraid of this. How many Jackson McKenna’s could there be? The hair is shorter and the face is older, but it’s him. I would know those eyes anywhere. Jackson McKenna. He was my first love and indirectly, the reason I had to use a cane to walk farther than across the room.
I cleared my throat and stood, reaching out to shake his hand as I would with any new patient, hoping he didn’t recognize me.
“I’m Dr. Parker. Please make yourself comfortable, Officer McKenna, and we can get started.”
When I realized his right arm was in a sling and we couldn’t shake hands, I dropped mine back to my side. Picking up my notepad and pen, I hoped he didn’t see the way my hands were shaking.
“It’s actually Detective, not Officer.”
He sat
on the couch across from me, observing with those hazel eyes that have haunted my dreams for ten years, and then he shook his head.
GoodReads Synopsis:
Can true love be FORGOTTEN?Review:
As the only Scion who can descend into the Underworld, Helen Hamilton has been given a nearly impossible task. By night she wanders through Hades, trying to stop the endless cycle of revenge that has cursed her family. By day she struggles to overcome the fatigue that is rapidly eroding her sanity. Without Lucas by her side, Helen is not sure she has the strength to go on.
Just as Helen is pushed to her breaking point, a mysterious new Scion comes to her rescue. Funny and brave, Orion shields her from the dangers of the Underworld. But time is running out - a ruthless foe plots against them, and the Furies' cry for blood is growing louder.
As the ancient Greek world collides with the mortal one, Helen's sheltered life on Nantucket descends into chaos. But the hardest task of all will be forgetting Lucas Delos.
Josephine Angelini's compelling saga becomes ever more intricate and spellbinding as an unforgettable love triangle emerges and the eternal cycle of revenge intensifies. Eagerly awaited, this sequel to the internationally bestselling STARCROSSED delivers a gritty, action-packed love story that exceeds all expectations.
Do you ever have a series or a book that, for whatever reason, you always put off reading? For days, months, sometimes even years? Well, this series happens to be one of those for me. I literally put off reading the first book in the series, Starcrossed, for years. I had been wanting to read it since 2011 but didn't actually buy it until 2012 or 2013. I didn't read the book until earlier this year. And I just not got around to reading the second book in the series. I don't know why I keep doing this to myself because the series is absolutely AMAZING. Like, I can't get enough of it.
The story line is crazy good. There are so many twists and turns and it's not very easy to figure out, which is something that really gets my attention. It's not often that a book is insanely unpredictable but this one is. I never know what's going to happen next and I absolutely love that. It's refreshing to not be able to figure it out half way through or even chapter by chapter.
I don't read a crazy amount of retellings even though I really enjoy them. I usually stick to contemporary romance but, with my love of retellings of greek mythology, I know that I need to expand my reading material. The ones that I have read, however, have not been like this one at all. Most of the ones that I have read focus on the Gods, the monsters, the Olympians. And, although this series has all of that, it's... more. If you've read this book then I'm sure you'll understand exactly what I'm trying to say. It follows a different sort of path than all the ones I've read before and I really like it.
The characters are just as great. Helen, Lucas, their friends and family, and now, Orion, really draw you into the story more and make you want to know what their journey is going to hold. I have to know what happens to them! I'm probably going to try to get the husband to make a stop at Barnes and Noble this weekend to see if they have Goddess, the third book in the series.
A great story, great characters, and an all around great series. I can't get enough.
Rating: 5 Stars.
Character: Lucas & Orion.
Exploring Texas: Mother's Day At The Amarillo Botanical Gardens
When I was looking for things to do around Amarillo, my Google search suggested The Amarillo Botanical Gardens and I knew that, at some point during our stay here, we'd have to check it out. As much as I love nature and florals, I have never had the opportunity to go the a botanical garden. The closer it got to Mother's Day, I kept trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my day and I kept coming up empty. My mind simply kept drawing a blank and I couldn't decide. So a couple days before, we decided it would be the perfect time to check out Cadillac Ranch (there will be a pt. 2 to this post) and the botanical gardens.
So that morning, I heated up the breakfast that I had prepped the day before and then we headed out. We first went to Cadillac Ranch and then drove around for a little bit trying to figure out where we wanted to go for lunch. I'm a great day planner, can't you tell? ;) So we ended up at Panda Express, which is always delicious and one of my faves, and then we went in search of our main destination. We started to get a little worried when my husband realized that Google said it was closed on that day and I was bummed. I really wanted to go there. It was pretty much the main attraction for the day and if it had been closed, I would've had no idea what to do with the rest of our day. Being optimistic, we decided to check it out anyway and were super happy to find that it was open! The guy said that it was just too much trouble for them to do all the necessary stuff to get Google to change all the information, considering their hours change multiple times a year, so they just left it the way it was. My lesson for you? Call and see, even if Google tells you the place is closed! You might end up surprised! So anyway, it was open and it was even more awesome because Bella got in for free and it was almost like we were the only people there. There was an older couple there and towards the end another family showed up. So we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves, which was amazing.
So, yeah! That's my long-winded introduction. :) Now on to the pictures! You'll also find a video of our little adventure at the bottom of this post.
