EXCERPT
All these months in South Gloucestershire, I’d firmly convinced myself there was only one version of that night anyone cared about. Now, looking at the more than half a dozen articles in front of me, I had to acknowledge that simply wasn’t true.I wiped the tears from my cheeks and handed Trini back the magazines. “Thank you for sharing these with me.”
“It wasn’t entirely altruistic. Georgica, I have a proposition for you.”
“If it’s Top Designer All-Stars, I’m not sure I have that kind of stamina anymore.”
She laughed. “No, not Top Designer All-Stars, although I’m sure the producers would be thrilled to have you. I’m here to help convince you to serve as honorary chair of the Met Gala.”
The Met Gala, also known as the Met Ball, was an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. The Gala was easily regarded as one of the most exclusive events of the year, with designers fighting to dress the high-profile celebrity attendees.
Trini continued, “This year’s theme is Fashion Queens, the Royal Influence on Style. The magazine was blown away by what you created for the wedding, especially the subtle historical references. You’re the absolute perfect choice to take this on.”
My head was spinning. While it was a huge honor to have even been considered for this job, the gala was on the scale of the royal wedding. Covered by all the major international media outlets, the Met Ball was considered the biggest night of the year for anyone remotely interested in fashion.
“While it’s so flattering that my name is even being considered, I just don’t think—”
Trini put her hand up. “Georgica, you aren’t being considered. You’ve been chosen. Anna Wintour wants you. The only queen that matters on this side of the pond just pardoned you—take the olive branch.”
“The Met Ball’s only a few months away. I wouldn’t even know where to begin.”
“The effort is mostly led by Jan Klaus, Director of the Costume Institute, but he’s an art historian by nature. We want him to partner with someone who can provide a more current take on the theme. Someone who’d be able to make the fashion more accessible and relatable to current trends. After seeing how seamlessly you married the old and new in Victoria’s dress, I know you’re the perfect person for this. Your aesthetic is right on the money.”
“Can I think about it?”
She stood up from the chair. “Think about it, but don’t take too long. Opportunities like this don’t come around too often in our industry.”
“To chair the Met Ball?”
“To come back from the dead.”
