Excerpt & Giveaway: The Princess of Baker Street by Mia Kerick

The Princess of Baker Street
Mia Kerick
Published by: Harmony Ink Press
Publication date: January 22nd 2019
Genres: Contemporary, LGBTQ+, Young Adult
“Always wear your imaginary crown” is Joey Kinkaid’s motto. For years, Joey, assigned male at birth, led the Baker Street kids in daring and imaginative fantasy adventures, but now that they’re teenagers, being a princess is no longer quite so cool. Especially for a child who is seen by the world as a boy.
Eric Sinclair has always been Joey’s best friend and admirer—Prince Eric to Joey’s Princess Ariel—but middle school puts major distance between them. As Eric’s own life takes a dangerous turn for the worse, he stands by and watches as Joey—who persists in dressing and acting too much like a Disney princess for anybody’s comfort—gets bullied. Eric doesn’t like turning his back on Joey, but he’s learned that the secret to teenage survival, especially with and absent mother, is to fly under the radar.
But when Joey finally accepts who she is and comes to school wearing lip gloss, leggings, and a silky pink scarf, the bullies make her life such a misery that she decides to end it all. Eric, in turn, must decide who he really is and what side he wants to stand on… though no matter what he chooses, the consequences with be profound for both teens, and they’ll face them for years to come.
Is there a chance the two teens can be friends again, and maybe even more?
EXCERPT:
Every day’s basically the same—it’s like the lunchtime bullying plan is set in stone, and it’s only the end of September. And it’s way worse than it was last year, even though he sat alone then too. Travis gets to sit at the jock table, seeing as he’s on the county football team. He starts in on Joey as soon as he sets his rear end on the bench and drops his lunch tray onto the sticky table. For Travis, “bullying Josie” is sort of like a bad habit he just can’t kick. But I’m pretty sure he’d say it’s more like a hobby he’s real good at.
“All the way through sixth grade, Kinkaid wore a dress, like, every day after school—I kid you not.” He announces this loud enough for the jocks and the entire hot-girl table, and of course, lonely Joey, to hear. And even though Joey wasn’t hiding that he wore his mom’s purple dress after school when we all played together, blabbing about it makes me feel like we’re ratting him out.
An imaginary knife stabs into my gut and twists around. I try not to squirm and to keep my face blank, but it’s next to impossible because my belly hurts like I’m having a baby.
“You’ve got to be kidding me—he wore a freaking dress?” Miles Maroney is always the first guy to jump in whenever things start getting mean and dirty. “But I betcha Josie looked cute, if you go for gays.”
We all laugh, and I mean all of us.
I laugh even though I don’t want to. Because I still remember how it was: Joey was the Princess of Baker Street, and Travis and Emily and Lily and me all looked up to him as much as middle school kids look up to the guys on the soccer team now. Joey was the neighborhood kid with all the best ideas. None of us cared what he wore out to play—not even Travis.
“What a freaking princess!” yells Noah Mayer, and we all laugh some more because Noah is the starting forward on the soccer team, and we pretty much have to laugh at everything he says when he’s trying to be funny, or he won’t pass to us. Maybe I forgot to pay my brain bill, but I know how shit like this works.

 ~SCARLETT~
A scraping of a chair, a tray full of food and I glance over with my practiced smile in welcome. It’s not Camila, Evangeline, or anyone else from the group. It’s green eyes, red hair, a familiar mischievous smile that used to be reserved only for me, and my blood pounds with excitement as if someone lit a sparkler in my chest. Then I frown because I’m not supposed to feel this way. Not with him. Not with anyone. Jesse Lachlin winks at me as he sits across from me like no time has passed from when we climbed trees together. “What’s up, Tink?” Another thrill runs through me but then my muscles tighten. Stupid, antiquated reaction belonging to a dead past. “What are you doing here?” Jesse pops a fry into his mouth, chews, then picks up another as if he has no intention of answering. I scan the cafeteria. Several people are watching us, curious as to why Jesse Lachlin is sitting with me, or is event at lunch, or even at school. From the lunch line, Camila’s and Evangeline’s eyes are bugging out of their heads. What is going on? Camila mouths. I raise my eyebrows to inform her I have no idea. Jesse digs into his corn with his fork and that’s crossing a line. “Maybe you didn’t hear me, but I asked what you’re doing here.” He lifts his eyes to meet mine and there’s a glimmer in them that causes my lips to flatten. Fantastic. He’s here to make my life a living hell. “It seems obvious,” he says. If he remembers anything about me, he should recall I was never known for my patience and that he should be speaking, and speaking soon. “Just answer the question.” “I’m eating lunch.” I honest to God groan in frustration. “There’s no room at the inn.” He surveys the table, takes in the empty seats, my books, and then gives me a good look. A slow look. As if he’s trying to memorize every inch he’s drinking in. My cheeks redden because that somehow feels a little too intimate for lunch. Feels a little too intimate for someone I’m no longer friends with. It feels too intimate if we were friends. I glance away, but I sense him still staring at me. God help me, I want to stare back.

Camera 1 - (Traphouse entrance) 21:46pm
“Yo, what time is it?”
“Nowhere near the end of our shift, I’ll tell you that much.”
“That’s not what I f*%#ing asked man. Anyway, I’m finishing up early today, I clock in at the nightclub by the beach soon.”
“So, another bodyguard is taking the night shift?”
“Yeah.”
“How comes Lancis asked you to bouncer at the club and not me?”
“Two reasons probably.”
“Go on, smart ass.”
“Firstly, cos nobody in this place pays to get in when I’m guarding the door.”
“I’d do the same sh*t man. He’s the one paying my bills at the end of the day.”
“And two. I call him Chef, not Lancis. It’s a respect thing, homie.”
“You’re a damn suck up, have I ever told you that?”
“That’s why you gonna be down here in this damn trap while I’ll be letting in all the sexy women. Have you seen the kind of babes down at the coast?”
“I wonder how you’ll feel if I told your baby momma about what you’re up to tonight?”
“Tell her? I hope she’s damn well there to see it herself. Ungrateful gold digger.”
“Hahaha!”
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
“Hey kiss ass, get the door.”
“I am. Someone has gotta do the work here. Chef gonna dismiss yo’ ass soon, mark my words.”
“Yeah, in your f*#%ing dreams. I was appointed to this trap by Maximov himself.”
“Really?”
“Yeah I used to bodyguard for the Bolivians main base.”
“So, you’ve met Maximov huh? What’s he like, is he as big and bad as they say he is?”
“You know what; he’s actually a chill guy. But when I say do not, I mean do not, mess with his money… Who the f*%# are you—”
SMACK!
With one light swarmed punch, the bodyguard who answered the door was knocked backwards with such force, he was forced from his feet. The second guard looked back and forth, perhaps expecting some sort of monster to emerge from the doorway, but to his astonishment a hooded figure wearing a cap came instead. Both guards had a considerable amount of height on the hooded boy and were at least double his width and it was this continued underestimation that lay wake to the next lumbering attack. The second bodyguard swung at the hooded assailant with everything he had, but the boy proved too swift. A wave of light followed every movement and when he swung back, the wave of light that came with his strike, gave him strength deceiving for his size.
BRACK!
Another punch landed and yet another bodyguard was floored.
“Argh!” The first guard had found a way to his feet and had begun charging at the hooded boy. In a moment that would not have been believed possible unless a camera had caught the footage, the boy grabbed the incoming bull by the collar and threw him over his head as if he was a rag doll. Three hundred pounds went flying into the wall behind and three second later the boy had his breath back.

Camera 2 – (Hallway 1) 22:02pm
The hooded boy proceeded from the fight scene and through a curved passage until he reached a single wooden door. He did not immediately proceed. Instead he put his hand outward and began observing the unfamiliar wavering effect emanating from his motions. It gifted him swiftness and lent him strength; the recompense, he suspected, of sacrificing his ordinary life. The boy pulled down his fleeced hoody, revealing a navy cap holding a tide of black waves. The beak cast a sinister shadow on the face below; a face intrigued by the power in the palm of his hands. The uninvited assailant did not look enraged or desperate; instead he looked calm and calculating. He pressed his ear to the door to hear what was happening in the next room. After he was content or perhaps discontent with the results, he descended to a heeled kneel. He then began muttering words to himself.
“Pay. They all have to pay. Like we did.”

Excerpt & Giveaway: A Prophecy Fulfilled by Andi O’Connor

A Prophecy Fulfilled
Andi O’Connor
(The Vaelinel Trilogy #3)
Publication date: December 9th 2018
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal
Regrouping after their escape from the Light Elves, Irewen and her companions fear the worst after black smoke plumes on the horizon. Allowing compassion to rule over reason, they ignore Finnwyn’s warning and return to Lilendvelle, hoping to help some of the survivors stranded in the city’s wake. Instead, they run into a trap.
Completely surrounded by an endless army of Drulaack, they fight for their lives, but their efforts aren’t enough. Irewen is captured and dragged into the heart of the Corrupter’s lair.
Having his prize, the others in the company are granted their freedom, but at a great cost: the one named in the prophecy who is meant to unite the elf forces and stand against the Corrupter is lost to the world – trapped beneath the Corrupter’s talons.
With the aid of his mother’s spirit, Brendell must now find a way to gather an alliance strong enough to march against the Corrupter and his army, but his time is running out. Each day that passes brings Irewen closer to death.
And the world closer to destruction.

EXCERPT
Dark plumes of smoke billowed up from the horizon. Irewen tensed. The Somdyrr carrying her placed her gently on the ground. She hovered there for an instant before falling heavily to her knees. The cold from the freshly fallen snow radiated through her worn leather trousers to her skin beneath, quickly turning her legs numb, but she didn’t move. Her mind remained fixated on conjuring images of the terrors the elves in Lilendvelle must have experienced.
Despair filled her heart.
“We’re too late.” Her whisper dissipated into the still air, dying before it reached her companions’ ears. Irewen slumped her shoulders further forward in defeat. It didn’t matter if anyone had heard her. Their own thoughts would be echoing the same sentiment.
Coming to a stop beside her, Laegon put a hand on her shoulder. “Perhaps there are some survivors.”
“Yes,” she replied half-heartedly, knowing by Laegon’s deflated tone that he didn’t believe a single word he’d said.
Silence fell among the company, everyone doing their best to comprehend the Corrupter’s wrath.
After fleeing the Light Elves, Irewen and the others had allowed themselves two days in the northern mountains of Grelden to regroup and strategize before setting out once again for Lilendvelle. They’d left in hopes of warning Lord Greldir of the Corrupter and doing what they could to save the Light Elves from the creature’s destruction.
But they’d failed.
Staring at the black smoke continuing to spread like a noxious poison across the sky, Irewen couldn’t keep the twinge of guilt at bay. If only they’d returned to Lilendvelle the moment Glynnduil had revealed to them the details of the prophecy, perhaps they would have been in time to prevent the Corrupter’s attack.
“We might be able to find a few people who were able to escape the devastation,” she said, “but what good will that do? Aside from healing their injuries, what aid can we give them? We don’t have enough supplies for ourselves.”
“Wouldn’t healing them alone be worth our time?”
Irewen looked up at Laegon, ashamed she’d become so callous. She took his hand in hers and squeezed it gently. “Aye,” she replied, her heart melting at the relief evident in his large, brown eyes. “It would.”
He smiled down at her, the grime and dried blood covering his face seemed out of place against his delicate elven features. His struggles continued to wear on him, but he somehow
kept fighting. He continued to put everyone else’s problems before his own, even those of people he’d never met.
Truthfully, Irewen couldn’t decide if it was a good characteristic to have. Nevertheless, she greatly admired him for his resolve; something she had yet to discover for herself.
“I don’t think we should waste time actively searching for survivors,” Brendell offered. “I know it sounds rather cruel, but we need to remain focused on our task of dealing with the Corrupter. Thousands more lives can be taken by his hand while we search the wilderness for days in hopes of finding a handful of survivors.”
“I agree,” Laegon said. “We’ll help anyone we encounter along the road to Lilendvelle, and we’ll leave it at that. Veering off that course will cause more harm than good.”
“No.”
Everyone turned to Finnwyn in exasperation. Her violet eyes stared into the distance. Her tall, lean body remained completely rigid. “It’s a trap.”

SNEAK PEEKS:
Excerpt from Holly Hook:
I’m Ellia, Syndie’s ugly stepsister. Mother knows this, so she works Syndie to the bone, but this whole time, she’s been waiting. Planning. Syndie wants us on the streets, and despite my kindness, I’m no exception.
Following her to the Courts lands me in the hands of a handsome guard, Jasper. Literally. And he doesn’t seem to notice my corset or frizzy hair. Nervous and secretive, Jasper wants to stop cruel Prince Calvin from becoming King, which he’ll do when he chooses his wife at the royal ball. And now I’m key to a plan that can save my family and the entire Kingdom.
Our weapons? Two magical slippers. One gives false beauty–but only until midnight. Then the other shows the wearer’s true nature. If Prince Calvin even holds the hand of his chosen when the clock strikes twelve, the spell hits him, too. Everyone will see the truth and he’ll never become King.
He and Syndie deserve each other.
I must make her dreams come true. But Mother, my sister, and a kingdom of jealous girls will do anything to stop Syndie from snagging the Prince. But what terrifies me the most is that trapped slipper. I can’t let Jasper see how ugly I am, but if it all goes wrong, I’ll have to give myself to its magic.
The Kingdom must be saved at all costs, even if I must sacrifice my happily ever after.
Blurb from Emma Savant:
Hidden in the city of Portland, Oregon, is a shimmering world of magic—one faerie Olivia Feye doesn’t want to touch with a ten-foot wand. She’d rather study biology, or garden, or floss her teeth, or do literally anything except pay attention to the Glimmering world and her internship at Portland’s premier faerie godparent agency.
But when her supervisor is hospitalized after a flying pumpkin carriage accident, Olivia is thrust into the middle of a case. And this one won’t be easy: Her client is Elle, a barista whose plans don’t include an enchanted prom or Prince Charming.
The reward for a happily-ever-after is enough gold pieces to get Olivia out of the Glimmering world forever. But as she comes face-to-face with the complexities of faerie godmothering, she’s forced to wonder: How much is she willing to sacrifice for her own happy ending?
Blurb from D.L Pitchford:
A modern day Cinderella with a twist…
High school seniors Noah Barton and Eden Prince have competed for top of their class since age seven. When their academic rivalry ruins a thermodynamics demo, their physics teacher decides to help them get along. By forcing them to be lab partners.
As graduation approaches, Noah and Eden are too busy figuring out college to deal with each other. Noah’s football-loving dad sabotages his chance to win a big scholarship. Eden’s traditional mother cares more about finding her a husband than encouraging her dreams.
Winning big at the regional science fair is their last hope.
Will Noah follow in his mother’s footsteps? Can Eden show her parents the environment is more important than a boyfriend? Will Noah and Eden finally learn to work together?
Follow Noah and Eden’s budding romance in this emotionally charged, gender-swapped retelling of Cinderella.
Blurb from Cate Dean:

But the truth is deadly. Analiese is a descendant of the God of Death, known as a Riser, with the power to raise the dead and control them. Finding out she has hidden powers? Cool. Finding out she turns corpses into killers? No, thank you.

EXCERPT:
The classroom smells like a funeral home.
Hushed voices pulse over the pairs of students hunching over trays spaced across the counters. The odor of bodies fresh out of gym class mingles with the scent of formaldehyde.
Hair dampens at my temples. A crematory would be cooler.
Not many have finished their assignments. Only a few overachievers sit in the rows of empty desks on the other side of the room, their tasks completed, proud smiles on their faces.
Mrs. Cryer shuffles around the tables watching over us—a reaper waiting for lost souls, her bony finger pointing out errors. She shuffles around with purpose. She shuffles around without direction. Then she stops at our table, her eyes peering over reading glasses.
“Mr. Bove and Miss Jordan, you two are falling behind,” she says, a disapproving tsk in her voice. She only uses last names when she wants to emphasize her warning. “Best hurry before class ends.”
She continues shuffling around.
Biology is my least favorite class. Mrs. Cryer’s assignments are outdated. It’s her last year teaching, her retirement long overdue. Stern and direct, she’s not the sort of teacher I usually like, but I do. There’s an underlying kindness to Mrs. Cryer. A kindness hiding in her eyes, evident in her actions.
One of the things I like about my school: my brother, Dalton, is in the same grade. We’re not twins or anything. Actually, we’re cousins. His parents adopted me when mine were killed in a boating accident on Lake Como in Italy. I don’t remember them. I was two when that all went down.
The thing I hate about school: Dalton’s in my biology class.
“Come on, Ana.” Dalton slides the dissection tray closer to me. “I did all the setup. Just make the first cut.”
The little green body looks rubbery—almost fake—crucified to the tray with pins as it is. I push strands of dark hair from my face with a latex-gloved hand. I could’ve opted out of this barbaric ritual of separating body parts from an innocent frog.
Why did I even agree to this?

Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother's animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. EXCERPT
Alex’s head hurt.
A lot.
She felt as though an entire troupe of Irish step dancers were performing behind her eyelids and she couldn’t close them tight enough to make the throbbing stop.
A light appeared above her, but whether it was natural or artificial—she couldn’t say. She tried to open her eyes, but discovered the light was too harsh for their precarious state and let them close again.
Her head was the heaviest it had felt, and worse than any hangover she could remember. Her body ached with more than a week’s worth of effort at the gym. As Alex attempted to push herself up into a sitting position and lift her head, a blinding pain came crashing through her skull all over her again and she fell back onto the bed she was lying on, clenching her eyes shut and praying this torture would go away.
She felt a hand on her shoulder, helping her steady herself back onto the bed, and a comforting lilt cut through the raging migraine behind her.
“Easy there. Traveling via Keys can be difficult for newcomers. You’ll get used to it as time goes on.”
Keys?
The memory of the confrontation within her living room flooded back to her and slowly Alex opened her eyes in the direction of the voice. As her vision adjusted, she remembered why. The same stranger from earlier stood before her. Or was it yesterday? She had lost track of time. He was standing over her, a candleholder in his hand. He looked down at her as she lay on the pillow, his blue eyes reflecting concern, pity and perhaps even amusement.
His eyes.
Then she remembered how she got into her current situation in the first place.
She wasn’t sure how long it had been since he abducted her, but before she could ask him, even at the thought of moving to sit up, the pain within her increased even at the slightest movement.
He hushed softly. “You are only going to make it worse. Just try to sleep it off, and we will talk when you wake…”
She stopped listening when the pounding behind her eyes and overall exhaustion overcame her and she let her eyes fall.

Excerpt & Giveaway: Sourpuss by Merricat Mulwray

Sourpuss
Merricat Mulwray
Publication date: January 20th 2019
Genres: Comedy, Contemporary, New Adult
Sourpuss is a blistering satire of the depraved and entitled culture that pervades college campuses.
Mallory Wahl loathes the campus party scene . . .
She’s sprinting through her senior year obsessed with winning a spot on the US Olympic track team. But she runs straight into a hurdle in the form of fraternity president Graham Patterson, an intern assigned to help her recover from an injury – one she blames on him.
Once Graham’s therapies begin to work, Mallory pretends to fall in love but traps herself in her own scheme and tailspins deep into his debauched world. When a scandal erupts which threatens to shatter her Olympic dreams once and for all, Mallory must finally face the dark truth she’s been running from since freshman year.
In the style of a ’90s dark comedy flick, Merricat Mulwray’s debut brings an insightful and humorous perspective to the reckless behavior college students perpetually get away with. Mallory, herself a flawed heroine, is backed by a self-serving cast of athletes, party girls, townies, and fraternity brothers so hilariously dark that the book will leave you wondering if anyone ever gets what they deserve.

EXCERPT
Mallory Gets A New Physio
Mallory sat all the way back into the deep seat of the faded brown couch in Coach Green’s office. Her right leg, immobilized by a tight, bright-blue knee brace, stuck straight out off the couch like a punch. This was the couch where students usually sat when Coach Green was going to yell at them. But today Mallory swung her left foot in happy expectation. She had stayed off of her bad knee. She hadn’t rushed to get back on the track. She did everything the team doctor told her, and now it was time for her to begin to rehab.
“Looks like the doc gave you the all clear,” Coach Green said as he came through his office door.
“Yup. She said that I can start physio,” she replied sitting up higher in her seat.
“That’s why I called you down here. The board wants to shake things up.”
Mallory’s face fell as her heart paused.
“You avoided a major injury, so there’s a little flexibility with the approach to your recovery.”
“Different approach? Like some cutting-edge technology?” Mallory asked.
“The higher ups have their agendas. You know we’ve got some student interns in our physiotherapy program that are mighty fine. Hell, you’ll probably recover in a few weeks without physio. Never knew an athlete like you, Wahl, the heart of a lion.”
“I’m not doing physio with an intern.”
“Can’t say I would be doing the cancan over it either. I know we’re going for gold. Trust your old pal, Coach Green—he’ll make sure you get the treatment you deserve.” He laid his hand on her shoulder. “You never disappoint me. You’re a true champion. You’re getting a real honor
here. As one of the higher caliber athletes on campus, you’re giving the opportunity to help these student interns grow in their chosen professions as well.”
“I guess I can give it a try.” Mallory’s lips stuck to her teeth.
“Atta girl!” he said, giving her a few firm pats on the head.
“So when do I meet this qualified individual?”
“Good girl. You’ve probably already seen this fella. He’s been making the rounds with each team.” He opened the door. “Come in here, my boy.”
Mallory hadn’t seen anyone new hanging around the athletic center, and Darius, who always managed to tell her everyone’s business, hadn’t mentioned anything. All she could do was close her eyes.
He was stuffing a half-eaten Rx Bar into his pocket as he came through the door. He even had the nerve to pop the collar of his university-issued polo. He shook Coach Green’s hand heartily and smiled.
“Thank you so much for this opportunity, sir. I can’t wait to get started.”
“What kind of crap is this?” Mallory said as she flung her body up and threw her crutches to the ground.
Coach Green turned to her. “What the shit is your problem, Wahl?”
“I’m not doing anything with that guy. This must be some kind of joke,” she snorted.
“Oh, do you know each other?” Coach Green asked.
“He has no place anywhere near any athlete,” Mallory said, her voice rising.
“Simmer down—”
“He’s the reason I clipped that hurdle. Him. He was out on the track acting like a jackass. He distracted me.”
“I can’t imagine I did anything to distract you,” Graham said, with a mocking grin.
“You’re not placing the blame on somebody else for your own mishap, are you, Wahl?”
“Well, it wasn’t quite like that,” Mallory backed up.
“Is this some kind of diva antic? We think that this is a major learning opportunity here,” continued Coach Green.
“Do you even know what kind of guy this guy is?” asked Mallory.
“He’s at the top of his department. That’s who this is. We don’t just give this internship to any yo boy,” replied Coach Green.
“Wrong. He’s the president of the biggest, douchiest frat on campus. He walks around with a freaking manservant,” said Mallory stomping her good foot. She stared Graham down.

EXCERPT
Upon waking the next morning, I was primed for a fight. Taking the stairs two at a time, I entered the kitchen to find Thom in front of the stove. My thoughts drifted when I saw him, and my accusing questions got stuck in my throat. Dark blue jeans hugged his hips, and he was naked from the waist up. A sparse stretch of sand chest hair ran on his muscular torso. As he waited for the eggs to cook, he scratched the stubble on his chin, his light blond curls tousled.
God, he's hot.
Suddenly feeling underdressed, I considered the white lace trim of the gray night camisole I was wearing. Nipples threatened to show through the thin cotton and the pajama shorts barely came to my mid-thighs, so I was practically naked, too. Blush crept on my cheeks and chest. We looked like two lovers having breakfast after a night of passion. Not that I'd had any of those in a long, long while.
I gave myself a brisk, inward shake. Stop it.
Thom chose this moment to notice me. "Good morning. Sunny-side up, or scrambled?" He asked with a dashing smile.
Ignoring the fact that my heart skipped a beat, I gritted my teeth together and forced myself to go on with my original plan. "Did you know I was going to end up here?" I asked point-blank.
The seriousness of my voice seemed to surprise him, and he removed the frying pan from the stove. "Yes and no."
A cryptic answer, again. I gave him a dirty look that commanded he stop being enigmatic. "Which is it, Walker?"
He winced. "I knew you might end up here."
Busted. I crossed my arms, waiting for an explanation. Better be a good one.
He took a deep breath. "Certain people have the latent ability to become witches even if their ancestors are not. They are called random witches and come from human bloodlines. That potential has a limited time frame, a few weeks at most. You weren't supposed to activate anymore." I frowned, and he caught my unspoken question. "You had turned twenty, and nothing had happened. We were going to move on."
I digested his words. My plan to break a window switched to the back-burner, and I found myself content with his answer, at least for the time being.
As I thought back on our last meeting, the night of my birthday party, everything made more sense. The sweet goodbye kiss on the cheek had felt like an adieu. He was going to leave, never to be seen again. That's why he hadn't texted me back the next day. "You move from girl to girl until one becomes a witch, and when they do, you save them?" I summed up, and he nodded. "Why?"
How did he end up with this occupation? I didn't remember seeing witch guardian in the university brochure.
"Because they deserve to be saved." He didn't say it out of self-aggrandizement but in earnest.
My stupid heart swooned. "How do you know where to look?"
He shifted his gait from one foot to the other. "Liam knows."
As soon as he spoke his brother's name, the shroud of worries reappeared, and I quickly changed the subject. "So, I'm a witch?" I stated out loud, curious to see how it sounded.
