Review: Fisher-Price Happy Days Diapers

As of now, with our little one, we've only tried two different types of diapers.  Pampers were given to us at the hospital after I had her and these Fisher Price Happy Days newborn diapers.  A couple packs of these were given to us by my aunt who had a baby months earlier and had some left over.

I do enjoy the size of the diapers.  They fit her well and they have the adjustable size-right band around the waist.  They feel nice and they swell up when they're wet so that it's easy to tell when she needs to be changed into a dry one.

I'm not going to lie, though.  I would never buy these diapers in the future if given a choice.  They work great for the most part but there have been numerous times I have gone to change her and the green velcro pieces on the wings that hold the diaper together around the waist have literally come off.  The diaper will be completely undone because it's fallen apart.  This wasn't just one batch either.  Both packs that I had (both were previously unopened) have been this way.  The green Velcro piece will be stuck to the front of the diaper but the wings they're supposed to be on are either just hanging there or are actually stuck to her sides with whatever sticky residue is remaining.

I will use the rest of the diapers we have because I can't fathom tossing them in the trash and I wouldn't give them to someone else, but in the future I will not be buying Fisher Price Happy Days diapers.

Isabella Faythe: 1 Month Update

Just a warning beforehand; these posts will be long and picture heavy.  I can't help it.  I love showing her off!

Age: 1 Month Old.

Birthweight: 6lbs, 9 oz.

Current Weight: 7lbs, 10oz.

Height: 19in. (As of last doctor's visit).

Clothing Size: Newborn (and most are a little big on her).

Diaper Size: Newborn.

Personality

She doesn't have much of a personality yet.  I wish I could say she's a calm, happy baby, but here recently she's been extremely gassy and fusses a lot.  We've been giving her some gas drops and they seem to be helping a little.

Feeding 

She eats about every 2-3 hours, except during the night when she'll go 3-4 hours between each bottle.  We had a lot of problems with getting multiples opinions on what she should be eating.  At the hospital and the pediatrician's, we were told to stop her at 40mL.  We didn't think this was right since she seemed to want more, but every time we asked, that's what we were told.  When we met with her cleft nurse in New Orleans, which handles the feeding area, she told us not to stop her.  The plastic surgeon we met with told us the same things since apparently cleft babies can sometimes have problems putting on weight.  So now we use 4oz bottles and she normally drinks around 2 1/2 to 3 ounces.  We were using the Pigeon nipple which is designed specifically for babies with cleft lips/palates but the nurse, again, gave us a different, longer lasting and cheaper alternative.  So now we are feeding her with preemie nipples and just cutting a large X into the tip.  She's doing great with it, except she takes in a lot of air so we have to burp her after every ounce.  I'm currently having some supply problems so we've been supplementing with formula.  We were giving her regular newborn formula but she's been having a rough time with gas so we've switched to the gentle kind.

Likes/Dislikes

She seems to really like lights.  While you're feeding her (if she's not staring right at you), you'll catch her gazing at the ceiling fan/light or during the day she'll stare at the light coming through the window shades.

She has a Nuby Classic Oval pacifier that she really likes.  It fits her mouth shape really well and is easy for her to keep inside of her mouth. I've tried giving her others, even another Nuby, and she still prefers this one.

She absolutely hates having her diaper changed.  She will scream bloody murder until you have her clothes back on right and you've picked her up.  Only then will she calm down.

She likes and dislikes bath time.  Sometimes she calm and seems to be enjoying herself and then sometimes she acts like she's getting her diaper changed, all the way up until she's completely dressed.

Sleeping PatternsShe falls asleep around 10 o'clock at night and wakes up every two or three hours.  If she's awake more during the day, she'll sleep longer.  Oh, and she smiles in her sleep.  And I can't get enough of it.

Check Ups/Doctor VisitsShe's been to the pediatrician's twice so far.  Each time she's been perfectly fine.  When she was first born she was pretty jaundice and was dancing on the line of having to be treated for it.  Thankfully it went away within about a week.  She hasn't had any more shots since we left the hospital, but I believe she's getting them at her next visit.  I could be wrong.  We also met with the plastic surgeon that will possibly be doing her repairs.  As of now, her lip will be fixed around 3 months of age and her palate around 10 months.  We met with our nurse as well (each cleft baby is assigned one for their team) and she showed us a little more about feeding and the bottles/nipples as mentioned above.  She also calls every Wednesday to check Bella's weight so they can keep track of how much she's gaining/losing.

We'll be going back to New Orleans on August 19th to meet with the entire team that will be working with her.

Milestones

She can hold her head up for a pretty long time.  Longer than I thought she would be able to.  She'll hold it up for a long time, look around, then rest it for a second, then do it again.  She's also able to put a lot of weight on her legs when you stand her up on your lap.

Isabella Faythe: Our Birth Story

Shamefully, I must admit that it's been quite a while since I made an update on my pregnancy.  Well, I am now happy to say that I will not be making anymore pregnancy posts for Bella because she has arrived!

At my last OB appointment at 36 weeks and 5 days, my doctor and I discussed inducing early because of all the complications that we were facing.  (Low fluid, gestational diabetes, cleft lip, anemia, etc.).  We had planned to induce the following Tuesday, July 2nd.  After speaking with her again, that date was changed to Monday, the 1st.

Since I was hospitalized at 32 weeks for extremely low fluid, I had been going to Maternal Fetal Medicine weekly to have my levels checked.  On Friday, June 28th, my levels had shown to have dropped back down to a 2, so we went straight from MFM to labor and delivery.  I was immediately placed in a room and my induction began at 4:00pm.

In the beginning, I was only 1cm dilated.  I labored throughout the night, was still at 1cm when checked the next morning and was given Pitocin to speed things up.  After a little while I was checked again and after dilating a couple more centimeters, my water was broken.  I immediately started having horrible contractions.  I lasted for a few hours before I asked for an epidural.  They decided to check the monitor to make sure it was working correctly because I seemed to be in a lot more pain that the monitor was showing during contractions.  When they checked my cervix, I was fully dilated!  None of us, even the nurses, could believe how quickly I finished dilating because of how slow it had gone beforehand.  And I began to push.

I would be lying if I said my delivery was anything like they show on television and in movies.  It began with two nurses, my husband and myself.  I pushed and apparently was doing very well because I only pushed a little before they stopped me to call in the doctors and nursery people.  She told me that if I pushed anymore, I'd be having my baby.  Once the doctor arrived and everything was set up, I pushed just a few times and out came my daughter.  As soon as I heard her crying, I began to bawl.  After so many attempts, so many years at trying and failing, an ectopic, and then with so many complications during my pregnancy, it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard in the entire world.  She weighed 6lbs, 9oz and was 19 inches long.  She was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and is otherwise perfectly healthy.  Her birth-date is June 29th, 2013.

Since it was an unplanned induction, it was just my husband and myself in the room.  My dad arrived at the hospital when I was in the middle of pushing.  He and my sister left Arkansas and headed for Louisiana as soon as they could after I told them I was being induced.  My mother in law and mother arrived  in Louisiana the following Monday.

My labor and delivery definitely did not go as I had planned.  I wanted a soft, calm, natural water-birth.  Pretty much everything was different, but I am perfectly okay with that.  Getting her out and having her healthy was and is the most important part of the entire event.

She's home now, we were released on Sunday.  From here on, we'll (hopefully) be doing weekly updates until she turns one month old.  I will also be including my postpartum updates within those posts.

I cannot wait to see how she grows and learns and becomes everything she was ever supposed to be.  Thank you for sharing along with me.  <3
